What's new around Porter

<< back to current Rumors

27.11.08

There are two things in life I fear: plane crashes and sharks. So what do I do for vacation? Go to an island you can only get to by plane that also happens to be in the middle of the Pacific in tropical climates, home to almost every type of shark there is.

Today I woke up with my big girl pants on, determined to swim in Kiholo Bay, a beach Dacia grew up swimming at which is also a sanctuary for many many turtles in Kona.

It's a beautiful white bottom bay that you have to hike 1 to 2 miles to get to.
The morning didn't have a cloud in the sky (rare for Kona) and we made it to the beach before it got too hot.

She was so excited to show me the turquoise bay during the daylight (cloudy days make the water look black) and right as we got to the bay we heard thrashing in the water.

We stopped and watched a fin carve up the water, zigging left, zagging right. Shark in the bay, attacking what was most likely a turtle or manta ray. Thinking it was a reef shark from my footage, I got in anyway (stubborn.) Upon inspection of the photos, we see (from the tail fin) it was a hammerhead (still dangerous but better than a tiger shark.)

I still went swimming, for about four minutes in the shallow end (I did stand in the three foot channel where the shark couldn't get to for about an hour, staring at the abyss of turquoise before me, trying to psyche myself up.) I had my big girl face on. I did it. Just not for very long.

Dude, the shark was big. You'd have pussed out too.
