Rumors: 10.2007What's new around Porter |
12.10.07I'd just like to point out that while I may not be "nauseatingly overhyped" at least I'm always on point, according to one musical act reviewer:Well, they've still got their sense of humor. The Burning Man-birthed Mutaytor isn't the mind-blowing act it was in its glory days (Coachella 2003, Key Club 2004, Henry Fonda 2005), but I'm glad their still doing their own freaky thing. Their August 3rd show at The Roxy Theatre was their first attempt at a series of themed shows, this one being 'The Moustache Show'. Everyone in the audience was given faux stashes, though many sported the real thing (or had full-on long beards and were dressed like wizards). Most attendees clad themselves in pre-Burning Man regalia, wearing over-sized, fury top-hats with neon phrases, neon headdresses, or light-up t-shirts. A nauseatingly hyped-up DJ Wolfie and the always-on-point, Porter Tinsley, opened for the main act, but I must admit, the DJ's beats were a hell of a lot better than The Mutaytor's. I know they had to work within the confines of a small venue, but I just can't let go of the days when we could expect to see some 90 day-glow percussions on stage, slit walkers dressed as unicorns, and characters getting "electrocuted". I knew I shouldn't have expected much (I vowed not to see them again after their lackluster performance at the Henry Fonda in 2006), but I still felt cheated. For newbies, like my friend Caren, it was an "amazing show". "They were awesome!" she kept exclaiming. "It's about time we see something like that in LA." Well, then their was my friend Deniz, another Mutaytor virgin, whose post-show remark summed up my sentiment rather adequately, "I kept thinking that [the main show] was the opening band. 30 minutes ago, I realized it was The Mutaytor."
